(U.S.) National Trans Visibility March 2019 – Ways to Participate and Support

(U.S.) National Trans Visibility March 2019

Ways to Participate and Support

Introduction

The (U.S.) National Trans Visibility March in Washington DC is planned for

28 September 2019 and the Metropolitan Community Churches and Global Justice Institute have ‘teamed up’ as a sponsor and in participating as faith leaders in the March.

This historic March is critically necessary in providing voice, action, and awareness to the ways in which trans people are discriminated against and harmed by culture and public policy here in the U.S. and around the world. We cannot be silent or silenced when we see hate rise and gender used as a weapon to harm, bully, isolate, and impoverish trans people that, in turn, diminishes us all.  Our faith calls us to speak up, step out, and stand with and for the most vulnerable among us. Just as Jesus turned over tables, we must speak truth to power – whenever injustice is plain to see.

This also creates an opportunity for transgender people to be ‘seen’ as the wonderful and magnificently created people we are and to invite friends, advocates, and allies to walk with us, in strength and power, for together…we all rise.

We hope that all MCC churches, clergy, congregations, and groups will participate in some way to raise awareness around Trans issues, stand in solidarity, further justice, and lift voices in unison as a community of faith. Although this is a U.S. event, we hope all MCCs will participate in some way (ways to participate are included in this document along with a Worship Tool Kit and Local Event Tool Kit that are made available as resources).

Resources

To help, we are providing more information about each opportunity (above) in more detail:

  1. Join MCC/Global Justice Institute at the Rally (9am-11am EDT) and March (11am-1pm EDT) in Washington DC on 28 September

MCC/Global Justice Institute Marchers are meeting at 10:30am at the corner of 13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, at Freedom Plaza before the March begins.  This will ensure we march together in unity and solidarity. Please bring banners from the MCC church or group you represent and your cell phones for pictures and videos!

  1. Participate in the Virtual March, hosted by the organizers (details to follow)

Details will be provided as soon as these are finalized and released.

  1. Observe a moment of silent reflection and prayer at 11am as the March begins

On Sunday September 22 (the Sunday before the March), during Worship Announcements, invite people to observe a moment of silence and lift prayer for the wellbeing and wholeness of Trans people; this includes access to healthcare; food, housing, and financial security; personal safety and opportunity to thrive.

  1. Organize a local event with community and faith leaders in solidarity

Join with other faith and community leaders to raise awareness and to form, strengthen, and grow relationships. Be creative! Do this as part of a ‘movie night’ or another event that is planned. Perhaps a community gathering can be planned after Sunday worship, hosted by the local MCC church. Please check out the resource “Trans Visibility March Local Event Tool Kit” for more ideas!

  1. Host a Trans Empowerment Worship Service or dedicate a time during the worship service at your local MCC on Sunday 29 September — to visibly lift Trans people in support and as a blessing (to help, a ‘Trans Empowerment Worship tool kit’ with resources is made available)
    1. Provide an introduction: that explains the purpose and meaning to the lighting of the Unity Candle
    2. The Unity Candle is then lit with a Trans flag under/surrounding it (for ease, a copy for printing is included among the resources provided in the tool kit)
    3. A prayer follows – that is lifted in support and in solidarity, in hope and blessing
    4. Make available printed resources that educate and highlight transgender issues (“The Basics,” “Frequently Asked Questions,” and “A Guide to Being a Good Ally”, are available in the tool kit)

Please include trans people in creating and then leading this portion of the service. This is true empowerment and important visibility!

  1. Send a picture to the March lead person ([email protected] or upload on the MCC or MCC Trans* Ministry Facebook page) that highlights the way you have participated

“A picture is worth 1,000 words” is so true. Share your experience and include a picture so we can share it with other MCC-ers. This is a unifying moment that has the power to bring MCC together and to make our faith an action.

  1. Attend one of the MCCDC Trans Empowerment Services (in Washington DC), held at 9am and 11am EDT on 29 September or host an online ‘Watch Party’

This is the culminating event to the March weekend. If you are able, please plan to join

this special worship service in one of the following ways:

  1. Join us at one of the two worship services as MCCDC welcomes our Marchers and lifts up the event as well as its purpose and meaning for Trans people here in the U.S. and around the world.
  2. Host an online Watch Party, invite your friends, and join the service live-streaming from MCCDC’s Trans Empowerment Service at one of the two services, sharing the ‘moment’ – live!
  3. Host a Watch Party at a later time, invite your friends, and watch the video recording online together, sharing the experience.

Thank you for participating as we MCC/Global Justice Institute join together in faith, love, and justice to change minds, hearts, and culture in every place and country!
