MCC: Tolerance & Faith — Proposed Mosque, New York City and the Globe

The Global Justice Team of Metropolitan Community Churches will present a webinar entitled MCC: Tolerance & Faith — Proposed Mosque, New York City and the Globe on Friday, September 10 from 3:00 – 4:00 PM (ET).

The purpose of the webinar will be to facilitate a healthy conversation from an ethical, theological and pastoral perspective. One goal of this conversation will be to enhance understanding of the significance of the proposed mosque near the site of the former World Trade Center in New York City as we near the upcoming 9/11/01 Day of Remembrance.

Our facilitator for this holy conversation will be the Rev. Gayle Davis, who is a lawyer and former prosecuting attorney in New York City. Rev. Davis is now a clergy person with Metropolitan Community Churches and is pursuing her doctorate in ethics under Dr. Traci C. West, Professor of Ethics and African American Studies at Drew University Theological School, Madison, New Jersey.

As we near the tenth anniversary of September 11th, Rev. Davis will use a Christian social ethical analysis to raise questions on the New York City mosque controversy:  What does it mean to build and live in the beloved community?  What are the ethical perspectives that should guide responses by Christian and civil communities to the mosque controversy?  Do death and destruction ipso facto make a community sacred or does sacredness begin in our response to such tragic events?

We invite you to join this conversation on Friday, September 10, 2010 from 3:00 – 4:00 PM (ET) by clicking the link below. Rev. Davis will address those attending for 30 minutes.  Her presentation will be followed by a Question & Answer period.

I’m disappointed that the webinar is scheduled during normal business hours. That will exclude many, including me.

Does MCC have an official stance on the Park51 Project. I am a 48 year-old, white, southern, straight man who no longer can be associated with churches that embrace prejudice, bigotry and willful ignorance. I visited the Wilmington, NC MCC for the first time last weekend and enjoyed the service and people. However, if I can’t find a church that takes an official stand on tolerance of – no – on SUPPORT of Park51, I’m just going to have to go the route of Ann Rice.

I look forward to your response. Thanks!
