A Moment to Celebrate

Metropolitan Community Churches

On this World AIDS Day and on the day we remember the bold action of Rosa Parks in Birmingham, Alabama, Metropolitan Community Churches worldwide celebrate the passage of a Civil Unions Bill in the State of Illinois.  Today the Senate passed The Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Unions Act by a vote of 32 to 24 following a 62 to 51 vote of the Illinois House of Representatives on Tuesday. When the law takes effect, Illinois will become the 6th state with broad legal protections for same-sex couples and their families in addition to the five states and the District of Columbia where same-sex couples can marry.

Today, we join the celebration and we thank the bill’s sponsors for their courageous leadership. We congratulate our friends and colleagues at Equality Illinois and all the LGBT advocates and allies across the state who fought so hard for this victory.

“This is wonderful news for LGBT people all over the country.  With this move, the Illinois State legislature has moved the country one step closer toward embracing equality, freedom and justice for all people,” said The Reverend Elder Nancy Wilson, Moderator of Metropolitan Community Churches worldwide.

MCC Marriage Equality Coordinator, The Reverend Jim Merritt commented, “On this day when we remember so many of our sisters and brothers who have gone on before us, and when we celebrate the legacy of Sister Rosa Parks, the Illinois State Legislature has shown us once again that hope always prevails.”

“Metropolitan Community Churches remains committed to marriage equality and to equality and justice for all people on every issue,” said MCC’s Global Justice Team Chair, The Reverend Pat Bumgardner. “Today we are another step closer to meeting that goal.”

This statement prepared in conjunction with The Moderator’s Global Justice Team,

Metropolitan Community Churches, The Rev. Pat Bumgardner, Chair.
