It is with heavy and aching hearts we share the passing of Rev. Houston Burnside, Jr.

Rev. Houston’s husband Bruno Giebultowski, his step-mom Connie Burnside, other family members, and Pastor Dan were with him when he transitioned peacefully to heaven this afternoon.

After leaving his Baptist church in 1984 upon being told his gay “lifestyle” was not acceptable, Houston found his way to MCC San Diego where he and his multitude of skills were warmly welcomed. An active member of MCCSD since January 1985, he served in many roles in church leadership, including Staff Pastor, and most without a salary.

Although he retired at the end of 2014, he continued to be a huge help to the staff, overseeing many special project areas ranging from computer technology to music to our participation in San Diego Pride.

We will announce the date and time of a memorial celebration of Rev. Houston’s life once plans are set.

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding,
deal graciously with us in our grief. Surround us with your love,
that we may not be overwhelmed by our loss, but have confidence
in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
