Carlton is the one who named “Imani MCC” and worked, tirelessly, with me to create the church. I’ll always be thankful for his belief and FAITH in God from which the name came. Rest in peace, my dear brother.

I have fond memories of the meal we shared long ago. Rest in peace and in power.

Thank you for the impact you still have on my life! You consistently showed the grace and love of God to ALL PEOPLE – including me!! You showered the purple love of Jesus on us all!

Rev Carlton, faithful, humble and wise. We are the better because you came our way. Rest in love my brother.

Rev. Carlton, I shall never forget you, my dear brother. You were always part of every trip I made to the Raleigh-Durham area of NC. I cannot even think of NC without thinking of you. You were always a steady and loving presence at all our early PAD Conferences, too. Things will never be the same without you. Enjoy your Rest.

I didn’t know Rev. Carlton personally, but I see an eclipse of light gone out and come to light again. His legacy will burn brightly in the warmth of his spirit so broadly spread. RIP man of God.

From 1987 – Before Carlton achieved the LCSW or M.Div, he made an indelible mark on my life. At a time when living in NC was new to me, I had lost my father and didn’t have friends within the same area code. I gained a rock solid source of strength, wisdom, support and understanding in Carlton.

I don’t even know if he realized how much it meant to be able to call him for ANYTHING and get gentle guidance, never judgement. Me: Carlton, one of my ponies got hit and killed by a car! Carlton: Now honey, I don’t do horses. Me: I know, but who can dig a grave for him? Carlton: Oh, ok _____ can do that for you… Repo man called Carlton, looking for me, to find the car. He realized what was up and called to tell me so I’d be able to make a plan because he knew that the man I was married to back then was not capable of handling it. Again, never judgement, just support. That same support was there 4 years later when I decided to go back to school and chose Social Work. I had to “shadow” a social worker and write about it. I chose Carlton and he showed me the passion that led me to 8 years of work in HIV/AIDS prevention & care. I credit those years of work, including leadership and advocacy on community, regional & state level; to Carlton’s example of grace. I was elated when he went for the M. Div; he’d been ministering to me for years. Thank you Lord, for putting Carlton DM Rutherford in my life. Amen.
