MCC Organizes ‘Coquí’ Construction Brigade to Rebuild Puerto Rico Community
Engineer and Volunteers Urgently Needed
by Rev. Elder Margarita Sánchez De León
Do you know about construction? Do you like to help? Do you want to participate in the reconstruction of a marginal community in Puerto Rico?
If the answers to these questions are yes, then MCC needs you to participate in the Coquí Brigade. The Coquí is a small frog endemic to Puerto Rico, which, despite its size, has a very powerful sound. That’s why we call this Coquí Brigade, because we hope to recruit a small group of powerful people capable of donating a week of work as builders.
The Coquí Brigade will build around 20 homes for the community of Miraflores in the town of Orocovis, located in the center of the island. This community was not only completely destroyed with the passage of Hurricane Maria, but has not received effective help from the United States government.
This is community very vulnerable. MCC will be developing this reconstruction project together with the Proyecto Matria https://www.proyectomatria.org/, an NGO that is supporting the Miraflores community.
Please, keep this mission in your prayers, and if you have skills in construction and feel the call to serve, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].
Questions and Answers about the Coquí Brigade
When will the brigade go to Puerto Rico?
The goal is to arrive before the peak of the hurricane season: August and September.
What needs to happen before the brigade can go?
An engineer will need to assess the area where we will be working. If you are an engineer and you are interested in supporting this evaluation, please contact Rev. Elder Margarita Sanchez De Leon [email protected].
What expenses should I plan to cover?
Each person is responsible for food and air transport. MCC will pay for lodging in cabins near the area. We will request special support for ground transportation in Puerto Rico.
