MCC Governing Board October Meeting Update:
Discussion and Financial Snapshot
Every time I sit down to write one of these updates, the hope is that there will be better news about COVID 19. It seems that infections and deaths are once again on the rise in many parts of the world. It will be particularly hard as we enter times of holiday celebrations. We may feel more isolated this year, as we cannot travel to see family and friends. This year it might be good to revive the notion of sending Christmas cards. Maybe we can drop cookies off at a senior’s home or have food delivered to the family gathering we are unable to attend. The thing is to start thinking about what we will do, now. We hope that things will be better soon. Please be safe.
Our Governing Board meeting was opened in prayer by Rev. Elder Dwayne Johnson who reminded us to look at the writing of Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman and how his writings are even more relevant during this time in the life of our countries and communities. He spoke about “look well to the growing edge.” Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman calls the growing edge “the basis of hope in moments of despair, the incentive to carry on”. May we all have the incentive to carry on.
We spoke about challenges that our church communities will face as they approach Virtual Annual Congregational Business meetings. And as always, we are proud of the way MCC churches are managing during these difficult times. The Council of Elders will be hosting another virtual prayer event. Watch for the dates and more information in CONNECT.
We continue to marvel at all the ways that Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston is engaged with our communities. You will find a link to her report here: https://www.mccchurch.org/governing-board/meetings/moderators-reports/
We were unable to review the financial reports in detail during our meeting due to staff leave, and have committed the November meeting to a more in depth look at the financials as we begin to prepare the 2021 annual budget. The Finance Committee has done amazing work over the year and we are incredibly grateful. Work on guidelines for the endowment fund has begun and we look forward to hearing more about this in the upcoming months.
As more and more people are without employment, the need for both financial and spiritual support increases. The economic strain has some churches struggling as well. If this is true for your congregation, we encourage you to reach out to the staff, network leaders and resources that may be available in your local community. You do not have to go through this alone. We encourage churches to reach out to those MCC congregants you may not have heard from in a while. We can do this together!
Last weekend, the MCC staff, Governing Board, Council of Elders and the members of the Commission on Pathways of Healing and Reconciliation attended a virtual anti-racism training with the Washington Consulting Group. This was one step, of many, to gain insight and understanding of racism within our world and MCC.
The Council of Elders’ terms are nearing completion and we are all so grateful for the pastoral leadership they have provided. Our bylaws state:
COUNCIL OF ELDERS: The Council of Elders of the UFMCC is that body authorized by the General Conference to serve in a pastoral role and direct the spiritual life of the Fellowship. This Council shall consist of a Moderator and Elders appointed by the Moderator, subject to approval by the Governing Board and affirmation by General Conference.
The selection and appointment of candidates to the Council of Elders resides with the Moderator. To that end, Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston will soon be announcing the process for those who may be discerning their call to serve as an Elder. Keep watching for an announcement.
Thank you so much for the ways you continue to be the face of MCC in the world. Remember to care for yourselves.
May our prayers and blessings surround you.
Respectfully Submitted By,
Rev. Elder Diane Fisher, Clerk of the Governing Board
Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston, Moderator
Mark Godette, Vice Chair
Chad Hobbs, Treasurer
Rev. Alberto Nájera
Rev. Paul Whiting
Rev. Marie Alford-Harkey
