Observing Transgender Day of Remembrance

Observing Transgender Day of Remembrance

by Jared Vazquez, Associate Director of International Diversity and Inclusion
and Stacy Sandberg, Working Group Leader

Next week, on 20th November, we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). TDOR was started in 1999 as a way to remember the death of Rita Hester, a trans woman who was murdered in her own home. Rita’s story is not an isolated incident. Trans* people remain one of the most marginalized groups in our communities experiencing higher rates of violence from both the public and law enforcement, rape, homelessness, depression, lack of access to medical care, and suicide. As a faith community committed to social justice we bear the responsibility of joining with our trans* siblings to increase trans* visibility, especially during this time when political forces in many communities around the globe are actively working to legally deny the inherent dignity of trans* folks.

What can you do to show your support of our trans* siblings in MCC and the world?

  • You can find a local TDOR event in your community and attend.
  • You can ensure that the bathrooms in your church are all-gender.
  • You can shift language in worship services to be more inclusive of all gender expressions.
  • You can create a liturgy that centers trans* experience.

The list goes on.

Below you will find a link to a toolkit created last year by the Trans* Working Group of MCC. You will also find a list of 10 things churches can do to be more actively welcoming of trans* people.

These resources are by no means exhaustive, and both the Trans* Working Group and I recognize that much more work needs to be done.

If you feel passionate about working to increase trans* visibility in MCC, we invite you to join the Trans* Working Group whose purpose is to generate and improve access to resources that will help us become more welcoming and affirming of our trans* siblings.

For information about joining the working group, please email us! We look forward to hearing from you.

Together in the struggle for justice,

Jared and Stacy
