23 June 2010 METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY CHURCHES HOLDS ITS 24TH GENERAL CONFERENCE IN ACAPULCO, MEXICO, JUNE 28 – JULY 2

Abilene, Texas, June 23, 2010 – Metropolitan Community Churches’ (MCC) global conference will take place from June 28 through July 2, 2010 in Acapulco, Mexico. Since its founding in 1968, MCC has been at the vanguard of civil and human rights movements by addressing important issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, and other forms of oppression.  MCC has been on the forefront in the struggle towards marriage equality in the US and other countries worldwide and continues to be a powerful voice in the LGBT equality movement.

MCC’s ministry reaches more than 43,000 members in 22 countries around the world. This marks MCC’s first Global Conference in Latin America and the denomination anticipates more than 900 attendees. Participants in the conference will take part in daily worship services, workshops, plenary sessions, networking opportunities and more. Some of the highlights of the conference will include internationally recognized speakers, leaders and performers such as:
_

  • Popular Christian Recording and Performing Artist Ray Boltz. Ray Boltz has dedicated more than fifteen years to music and ministry. Through these years he has captured the attention of the CCM Industry by garnering three Dove Awards, two gold albums, a gold video, and twelve number one singles. He has also sold more than four million units of product. Through all this time and these accomplishments Ray’s vision for his ministry still remains the same…to produce and perform music that allows listeners and audiences to see Jesus. In September 2008, Ray Boltz came out nationally as a gay man.
  • In March 2009, West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran, Lt. Dan Choi, announced that he was a gay man on The Rachel Maddow Show. Despite his extreme value as an Arabic speaker able to communicate quickly and clearly with the Iraqi people, one month after his announcement, Lt. Choi was notified that the US Army had begun discharge proceedings against him because of its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
  • Notable author, speaker and pastor, Brian D. McLaren will participate in a plenary via a videoconference during the conference.  Brian D. McLaren is a frequent guest on television, radio, and news media programs. He has appeared on many broadcasts including Larry King Live, Religion and Ethics Newsweekly, and Nightline. His work has also been covered in TIME (where he was listed as one of American’s 25 most influential evangelicals), Christianity Today, Christian Century, the Washington Post, and many other print media.

This year’s conference will also be a momentous occasion as it welcomes, The Fellowship. The Fellowship is a multi-denominational group of primarily African American Christian leaders and laity representing churches and faith-based organizations from the USA, Africa, and Mexico. These churches range from ultra-conservative backgrounds to more liberal, independent churches.

Metropolitan Community Churches, founded in 1968, is a human-rights movement and ministry operating as a Christian denomination in 22 countries around the world. MCC is an international advocate for vulnerable people in places where religious orthodoxy, sexism, and homophobia can result in violence and death. MCC’s promise is stated in its tagline “Tearing Down Walls, Building Up Hope.” For more information about MCC visit https://www.MCCchurch.org.
