MCC Supports Holy Resistance to Travel Ban into United States

posted in: Immigration, MCC News | 0

Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) stands as a people of faith who are committed to social action and communities of inclusion.

The detainment of persons in USA airports and airports in other nations in the last 24 hours is an offense against the Bible and justice. MCC follows the Biblical mandate to welcome the foreigner and refugee. Out of our faith, we will take action on behalf of those who cannot effect change on their own.

MCC of New York reports that two MCC people were detained; one from Sudan was released, another, a student from Iran, was deported to Iran without warning or recourse.

We at MCC stand with refugees, asylum seekers, and those among us who seek shelter. There are hundreds of thousands of people legally in the United States, who are refuges or who hold legal visas and green cards, who are being intimidated and threatened. Individuals are being advised not to travel on the possibility of being turned away upon return. This is unjust and is antithetical to American values of freedom and due process.

Building a wall or forbidding the people of Muslim countries to enter the land is an affront to the teachings of Jesus who said, “Love your neighbor as yourself” and lifted up a foreigner, a Samaritan, as the best example of whom to love.

Today, MCC members will continue to build bridges to people around the world and to unite voices of holy resistance against this injustice.

If you would like to participate in a webinar to learn more about how MCC can respond, including the concept of Sanctuary spaces, please contact Jack Hutter ([email protected]) and give him your name, church, and email. We plan to offer an informational discussion later this week. Jack will send an email with details after they are finalized.
