19 September 2019
Dear People of God:
The Governing Board is committed to being open and transparent. We are committed to providing monthly meeting updates to keep you informed about the business of the Fellowship. We have also agreed to hold quarterly webinars, so that we can answer questions from you. We will invite questions in advance, so that we are able to have the information to hand on the call. The date of the first webinar will be announced soon.
The Governing Board met on 3rd September. We have moved our meetings to the first week of the month, so the Finance Committee is able to get all the information needed from the previous month to prepare their report. It was a positive and uplifting meeting, as we considered the ministry we are engaged in together.
The Governing Board has invited a member of the Council of Elders to open each of our meetings in prayer. Rev. Elder Pat Bumgardner blessed us with prayer this month, and then left the call as we started our meeting. We are glad to be working closely with the Council of Elders in many different ways.
At the beginning of the Governing Board meeting, we spent a little time dreaming about what we hope for in our time serving together. These included being more global, being financially strong, having local churches and church leaders feeling connected and cared about, and being more diverse in everything we do, including breaking down language barriers that stop people from participating.
On our agenda, we discussed many different items. Here is a summary of the main decisions:
Agreed to set up a Commission to look at the future of General Conference. The Commission will also consider the voting structure at General Conference.
Approved a 50% assessment of the current rate for Emerging Churches.
Agreed that the Moderator will work with the Council of Elders on establishing pathways to healing.
Agreed to start the process of setting up committees to support the work of the Governing Board and asking people to serve. We want these committees to be as diverse as possible, so that we are able to use the great expertise and wisdom that we have in MCC.
Received the Moderator’s report. The full report can be read here: http://bit.ly/2lUv09s.
We deferred discussion of the motion regarding assessments and the motion to set up a Commission on Rites and Sacraments to our October meeting. At that time, we will also consider the motion to have Governing Board meetings in open session.
Governing Board Treasurer, Chad Hobbs, has been working with MCC staff and the Finance Committee to provide an up-to-date and easy to follow financial “snapshot.” The financial summaries for June and July are shown below. Full financial reports can be found on MCC’s website (https://www.mccchurch.org/how-we-work/finances/). It was wonderful to note that 121 churches around the world received a letter from the Governing Board, thanking them for their faithfulness in sending their assessments on time and consistently every month. Several individuals have also increased their personal giving through the Moderator’s Circle.
Please continue to keep us all in your prayers, as we serve you.
Respectfully submitted by,
Rev. Elder Diane Fisher, Clerk on behalf of the Governing Board
Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston, Moderator
