Leaked supreme court document is cause for concern, church leader says

A draft opinion leaked from the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) indicates that a majority of the Court’s nine members have voted to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which ensured access to abortion throughout the United States, and leaders of Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) are decrying the pending publication of the ruling.

In the leaked document, SCOTUS Justice Samuel Alito writes that the original Roe decision was legally flawed, and that there is no constitutional right to reproductive freedom. The opinion, in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, is expected to be published and become binding sometime over the summer. The SCOTUS ruling would eliminate guaranteed access to abortion, and would leave the issue to the individual states, some of which already have abortion bans or restrictions in place that will become binding law.

“If this leaked document is accurate, and reliable media sources believe that it is, it should be a source of alarm for all freedom-minded people everywhere,” said Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston, moderator of MCC churches worldwide. “One need not be a lawyer to understand that control of one’s own body is the most basic of human rights. I will pray that God changes the hearts of these Supreme Court justices and that this ruling will not be published as drafted.”

Last year, the MCC Council of Elders published its own statement about reproductive freedom which reads, in part:

“The MCC Elders celebrate that all God’s people are provided with agency – the ability to act independently without coercion from the state, religious bodies or family systems. When MCC gathers in all of its glorious theological diversity, we recognize that while we may have a myriad of spiritualities, we may at the same time encourage one another in seeking God’s truth, justice and salvation. The well-known hymn “They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love,” proclaims that “we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride.” MCC is called to protect the dignity of people seeking reproductive justice and resist political manipulation that aims to eliminate self-determination.

“Some countries and states have taken drastic steps to reduce access to abortion and this is a matter of both reproductive and economic justice. While on the surface the recent decisions seem to be limited to abortion, they are also about a continuing disdain of poor people (people with financial means have always and will always have access to abortion due to their money and connections). Economic inequality often makes an appearance alongside gender inequality.”
