Elders Code of Conduct (Adopted 9 December 2013)

Members of the Council of Elders and former Elders shall be subject to the Ministry Leader Code of Conduct as outlined in the MCC Judiciary Process.

As appointed and affirmed spiritual leaders of MCC, Elders are also held to a higher standard of conduct, which reflects the authority of the office and the trust of the people we serve.

To that end, all Elders shall:

  • Demonstrate loyalty to and uphold the vision, mission and core values of MCC.
  • Exercise the authority of the office of Elder responsibly for the benefit of all served and not for personal gain.
  • Not use the power of the office to manipulate or coerce.
  • Be required to report suspected violations of the Ministry Leader Code of Conduct to the Council and Director of the OFLD.
  • Recognize that as spiritual leaders for the entire denomination, any relationship with an individual member of MCC is a pastoral relationship and so shall exercise discernment and care when entering into a financial, business, romantic or sexual relationship with a member of MCC or with a member of MCC staff.
  • Engage in a regular program of individual spiritual development in order to provide an example for our people and be equipped for the role to which we have been called.

Further, members of the Council of Elders shall:

  • Observe confidentiality, maintain mutual respect for Elder colleagues, and speak with one voice as a Council.
  • Be transparent with the Council of Elders prior to entering into a financial, business, romantic or sexual relationship with a member of MCC or with a member of MCC staff.
