KWANZAA BEGINSKwanzaa Candles

HAPPY KWANZAA to all of our members for whom this is an important part of their holiday celebrations.

To learn about Kwanzaa, check these links:

The theme for 2020 is “Kwanzaa and the Well-Being of the World: Living and Uplifting the Seven Principles”
kwanzaa-candles-drum.jpg
The Black Candle: A Kwanzaa Celebration (2008) is a landmark documentary film by MK Asante and narrated by Maya Angelou. It is available for purchase or on streaming services such as Prime, Tubi and Starz TV.

The first Principle of Kwanzaa – UMOJA – unity

Umoja is Unity as it relates to family, community, nation and race.

BOXING DAY – December 26th

This is a holiday in many countries like the United Kingdom and Canada. Historically, the day after Christmas was a holiday for servants. The rich would box up leftovers and gifts for the poor and the servants would take their Christmas boxes home to their families. Over time, this shifted to employers giving a day off to employees and sending a Christmas Gift Box. In modern times, many see boxing day as a time to scoop up Christmas sales and box them up for next year! It is NOT a time to box up your Christmas decorations as there are 12 days of Christmas.

December 26th is also known as St. Stephen’s Day celebrating Stephen who was the first named Deacon, provided for the poor, and was martyred.

Council of Elders Facebook Group

Jesus encouraged his disciples to practice simple living—in sending them out two-by-two, he told them to take no money, no bag packed with extra clothes and no walking staff. Many religious orders also practice simple living. What does the spiritual practice of simple living have to teach us? Elder Nancy Maxwell will explore the practice of simple living, as well as take prayer requests to the Council of Elders.

GOODBYE 2020, Hello 2021 – A New Year’s Eve Prayer

Thank You, God, for seeing us through this challenging year. Thank you for teaching us how to BE church when we could not worship in our church buildings. Comfort those who lost loved ones this year and those who lost jobs or were displaced from their homes. We are mindful of those who continue to struggle for food, shelter and justice. We acknowledge that we have much work to do to achieve racial justice and equity. Guide us as we enter 2021 to continue the work of MCC around the world. Help us do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. Amen.
