MCC Governing Board April Meeting Update:
Discussion and Financial Snapshot
April 2020 Governing Board Narrative:
We pray that you are all safe and sheltering at home. The COVID-19 virus has pushed us towards creative new models of church and it has been a joy to be able to drop in on worship services around the world. The Governing Board is so grateful to all our churches for the many ways you are supporting your congregations and communities. You are amazing.
At our recent meeting, we were blessed to have Rev. Elder Margarita Sánchez De León open us in prayer. She reminded us of what a privilege it is to be able to stay at home. Much of our world lives day to day, trying to survive and must go out daily for food. She called for us to lead with generous and compassionate hearts.
As the Governing Board checked in, those of us who are pastoring churches spoke of how we are working harder and more hours than ever before. We shared our grief about not being physically together for Holy Week and we reinforced the need to encourage our churches and congregations to shelter in place and work from home. We recognize that congregations will be encountering new and different ways to serve their communities and that food insecurity will increase as the costs continue to rise. We were all thankful that we continue to be able to work from our homes.
During this time, the work of MCC continues and we have now completed the 2017 audits. We wish to thank Tammy Erwin for all the additional work she has done to ensure the auditors have all the information needed. MCC applied for the Payroll Protection Plan from the US Government to cover payroll for our US based staff and is waiting to hear. We would like to thank Rev. Dr. Kharma Amos and Tammy Erwin for ensuring that this was submitted very quickly.
The Governing Board and the Board of Pensions (USA) continue to strengthen our collaboration. Thank you to the Board of Pensions for your selfless commitment and to all the US churches who faithfully make their contribution to the Board of Pensions fund.
Our MCC staff has worked tirelessly to support the work of our churches and to help us move quickly to a virtual world. Training has been provided on Zoom platforms and how to be creative in a virtual space, Stewardship in a Virtual World, and hosted a LGBTeaQ Time. Thank you.
During the meeting we lifted up our Strategic Priorities for the year, which are guiding the work of the MCC staff:
- Improve feelings of connection and belonging throughout MCC
- Encourage a culture of Sufficiency and Generosity
- Ensure that Diversity and Inclusion are imbedded and measured in all our work
The Governing Board continues its commitment to being transparent and open about its ministry and will be offering another two webinars, so that you may ask questions about our work.
The dates for the next Governing Board Webinars are:

Please mark these dates on your calendars and look for information about how to submit your questions.
Currently, our prayer is that all our churches, our communities and our world will move through this time with grace and compassion. We pray that we will learn from this time what truly matters and new ways of supporting one another without boundaries or borders. We know that we will be forever changed, and that God is here in the midst with us all. Help us to be the leaders we need to be as we reshape what it means to be church in a global reality.
