Christmas Resources

Christmas Hope in a Chaotic World
Resources for celebrating Advent and Christmas in 2020

What a challenge 2020 has been! Virtual Worship has become the norm during the time of COVID. Churches, pastors, worship teams, musicians and worshippers alike have had to adjust how they plan and conduct worship. Christmas plans, for many, have been on hold as we hoped and prayed we could safely gather in person again.

These resources are much later coming out than we would like. We too have been adjusting to the challenges and demands of COVID. We acknowledge that these are arriving too late for churches that have already done their planning. They may be of use to you in another year. Still, you might find something that will add to your current plans. For those of you who are only able to plan a few weeks or a month ahead, we hope these resources may assist you.

This is the first offering in our Resource Bank. We will be adding and storing resources so that you can find them at any time. For now, click here to go to a Folder with the current Advent/Christmas Resources. Our theme for 2020 is Christmas HOPE in a Chaotic World. In this folder you will find Liturgical Elements and Sermon Starters. The document “Ideas / Traditions / Practices for Advent and Christmas” is applicable to any year although there are great ideas for this year to incorporate virtually! There is also a “Longest Night Service” (for those in the Northern Hemisphere) and another “Blue Christmas Service”. These too will be applicable to any year.

Music Resources and a Virtual Christmas Concert coming your way!

In a time of COVID when most church choirs have not been able to rehearse or offer a Christmas Concert, we are pleased to bring you a Virtual Christmas Concert! This is planned for December 12th. MCC Musicians have already submitted their song titles and are busy making their videos. Details and times will be announced shortly. We will provide you with a graphic and information to share with your congregation and beyond.

In addition, we are making individual music videos available for you to use in your virtual worship! We know that many churches have struggled to find or create quality and MCC appropriate music to use virtually. We hope this resource will help you celebrate during Advent and Christmas.

Churches must have their own Christian Copyright License Inc. (CCLI) or appropriate music license by country and Streaming licenses to broadcast these videos. The local church assumes all responsibilities and liabilities for local streaming. If you have questions about these required licenses, please contact [email protected].

Our goal is to begin uploading individual music videos by November 15th and continue adding them as we receive them and complete editing. Please check back frequently!

The Music Resource Folder will be found within the Advent and Christmas Folder link above.

Advent Reflections: Opportunity for Your Members

Watch Wait Hope Advent JournalThanks to MCC of Greater St. Louis (Missouri, USA, pastors Rev. Wes Mullins and Rev. Lauren Bennett), this Advent a number of churches from Florida to Auckland will come together to offer a Daily Advent Journal and Reflections. The Advent Journal, from the UK, includes a daily scripture reading, reflection questions, and prayer guide to help cultivate a thoughtful Advent practice.

There will be Zoom reflection sessions offered Monday-Friday led by people from the various participating churches. Even if you are not engaging with this particular Journal and daily practice, you are invited to join any or all of these reflection opportunities. These times are intended to give you a space to commune with others from all over as we dream together of what might be waiting for us in an unpredictable, uncertain world.

Reflection times:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday: midnight GMT/7:00pm EST/1pm NZDT (next day)

Tuesday and Thursday:6pm GMT/1:00 EST/7am NZDT (next day)

More times from New Zealand will be added to this schedule.

Check for updates in the CONNECT as we approach Advent.
