What YOU can do

1) PRAY

2) Consider making a donation either here online or by mail click here for Donation information.

3) Donate to American Red Cross.

4) Let us know if you can offer lodging, food, clothing, etc.  If so, where? for whom? for how many?

5) Donations of sanitary napkins, tampons, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, bottled water, baby formula, wet wipes, hand wipes, combs, hair brushes and any other personal hygeine items are needed immediately.

6) Deploy material assistance in the form of grocery cards, pharmacy gift cards, prepaid phone cards, wal-mart or target gift cards and gas cards.

7) Offer volunteer support to Houston and Dallas areas plus any churches offering direct support in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Both the Astrodome and the Dallas Reunion arena need volunteers and will need additional material support immediately.

8) As a denomination serve as leaders alongside other faith communities.

9) Ask your local church to collect materials for donation and arrange with the Red Cross the best way to deliver items.  (The Red Cross has reported that various donations have been dropped off without any communication with a volunteer coordinator.  Items left without processing are being overlooked because staffing is short.)

10) Water and personal sanitary are a critical need. Food packs (food in individual packages that will not spoil are needed critically).

11) Tom Thumb and Chase have partnered to provide "Scan" card donation sites. Donations can be made directly at any Tom Thumb or Chase. You can add money to these "Scan" cards which are given to disaster victims to purchase items such as diapers and formula. Kroeger has made a similar arrangement. Your local grocery store chain may have set up this system as well.

12) FEMA and the Red Cross have undertaken a massive refugee operation to move tens of thousands of impacted residents from impacted areas. The current prediction is that New Orleans (home to nearly half a million persons) will remain evacuated for two to six months.

13) According to the Houston Astrodome and Dallas Arena Relief Workers, a main request of Katrina survivors is for a Bible.  Please consider sending or taking Bibles to a local congregation or Red Cross center for donation.

14) On September 2, 2005, Tim Gill and the Gay and Lesbian Fund of Colorado established a Katrina Relief Fund.  To learn more about giving to this program, click here

General News Updates

1)  (24/02/2006)   Read about MCC's "Third Wave" visit to New Orleans by clicking here.  The struggles are not over, and we are still making efforts to help!

2)  Survivors from New Orleans are also being bused to Dallas to the Reunion Arena by the thousands.

3) Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex schools have enrolled over one hundred children who are without school records and have lost all of their school supplies. There were reports of deeply frightened parents who did not know that federal law mandates refugee children be immediately enrolled in a haven place school district.

4) Many churches have already responded in positive ways. In Dallas, Potter's House deployed trucks full of food to the impacted areas. They are utilizing their prayer line for the disaster victims to help people connect with their faith during this tragedy. New Millennium Fellowship Church setup cots and a crisis center in their church in Dallas. These are just two examples of the responses that are unfolding.

5) News reports indicate that Houston has seen an influx of 50,000 people already.  Dallas/Ft. Worth and San Antonio are expected to receive an influx of 25,000 people over the Labor Day weekend.

6) Fox news reported that major airlines have partnered to organize an air lift of survivors from New Orleans to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX.

7) The Houston Astrodome has reached capacity, according to CNN.

8) As of September 2, survivors of Hurricane Katrina are now able to utilize Air America Radio's Voicemail program to reach their loved ones.  Click here to learn more.

9) We've heard from Texas Children's Hospital how to best assist in their efforts.  Click here to read about donations to Texas Children's Hospital.

10) We've had an individual in Austin, TX offer to transport GLBT AA members to attend the Austin Lambda/Live and Let Live meeting.

Offers of Housing Aid

We are overwhelmed and thankful for the number of individuals and groups who are willing to house those who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina.  We now have a list of over 150 housing units for GLBT community members, their families and friends.  If you have need housing and have been displaced please call Rev. Kurt Krieger at 866-HOPE MCC to enter the process to see if we have a location and availability that would meet your need.  If you have volunteered your home, we are keeping that information with our people on the ground in Lousiana and Alabama to help locate those that need housing and you will be contacted directly by them.  At this time, we don't anticipate the need for additional housing stock, except for those who can house people within an hour of New Orleans.    Again, thanks for your enthusiastic response.
