Welcome

Welcome to the MCC 2007 Transgender Day of Remembrance Resource Pack, developed by the MCC Transgender Resource Team.  We are proud to announce the release of our Day of Remembrance Resource Pack to help you organize with in your local congregation and community!

As the MCC Transgender Resource Team began to reflect on our communities and what the Day of Remembrance means for us, several themes came to bear.  We see this day as a time to mourn those who have been lost along the way, and also to empower each other through raising public awareness. The Day of Remembrance brings about a great sadness, but also gives us hope because it means we are speaking out and not allowing fear, hate, and injustice hold us down.  It means we are still here, that

some of us have survived.  It means, more than ever, that some of us are thriving in a world that often doesn’t offer us the most basic protections under the law.

As a community, we must use this day to grieve for those whose lives have been taken simply for being true to themselves.  We remember Brandon Teena, Gwen Araujo and many others whose beauty has been taken away from us.

We must also turn our grief into determination and speak out for those who are voiceless. Through organizing as a community and vigiling together we are approaching this issue in truth and in love, professing that hate and prejudice have hurt us and our siblings while standing up to say, “We refuse to be silenced any longer.”

The Day of Remembrance has the opportunity to impact our congregations, our families and our friends.  This day may also be a time of healing for us, our significant others and allies.

We ask that you participate in a global, collective action on Sunday, November 18, 2007. Whether in a full worship service or a time of prayer, join siblings around the world to recognize this day.  Throughout the weekend of November 16-20, events are already planned.  We have collected a short list of events advertized through local websites.  Please inform us of events taking place in your congregations and communities. If there are none, organize your own.

This kit, though providing a series of resources for your use this year, is still incomplete.  It lacks your testimony, your activities, the wealth of your community and congregation’s efforts.  Let us know about the activities, worship services, celebrations and vigils created by your local community.  Remembrance is a work of the people, a liturgy drawn from our collective experiences.  Participate in the creation of our MCC Day of Remembrance both by utilizing these resources created for you and by sharing your experiences for our community around the world.

Our Transgender Day of Remembrance Resource Pack will continue to grow as our communities continue to share.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Blessings,
~The MCC Transgender Resource Team (Email)
